So how much do you spend on your pool chemicals at the moment?. According to an article in the pool owners of NZ website, you can spend anywhere between $NZ400 and $NZ1100 per year just on chemicals for your pool. (and that's only dosing on the summer months). This doesn't factor in the time it takes to go to the store, test the water, measuring the chemicals out and adding to the pool.

Just how bad are those chemicals ?

The combination of chemicals needed to sanitise your home swimming pool are effectively the same as those needed for a public pool, and those are kept locked away and handled by professionals for good reason, they are not safe for humans or the environment.

The first and major chemical added is Chlorine, this is used as a sanitiser, unfortunately is is toxic, it can cause and can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, and other health problems upon exposure. Inhalation of chlorine gas can lead to severe lung damage and even be fatal at very high levels. When mixed with water it does not stay active for very long, either evaporating or going inert very quickly which his why so much is needed to be added. A stabiliser (Cyanuric Acid) is also added to slow the Chlorine evaporation.

When Chlorine is added to the pool water it also has the unfortunate side effect of messing up the pH of the water, and the alkalinity, which requires a combination of Soda Ash, Muriatic Acid or Baking Soda to try and correct. Algaecide is often also added to help control the growth of Algae.
